Source: Ventura County Star, Calif.迷你倉新蒲崗Aug. 09--With 23 straight conference titles, the Ventura College women's basketball team is known for its consistent success on the court. But the Pirates have also built a similar streak in the classroom. When coach Ned Mircetic's program was named to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Honor Roll on July 17 with a 3.310 GPA, it joined Northwestern College (Iowa) as the only two-year schools in the country who have been earned the honor 10 straight years."So much of this job is based on what actually happens on the court," Mircetic said. "But so much of this job is dependant on what happens in the classroom, even if the classroom doesn't get nearly the notoriety it deserves."So it's really a quiet sense of pride, although you really want to jump out and yell it out for everybody to hear."The Pirates were led by academic all-state selections Hanna Burge and Eda Graham, who completed their degrees with perfect 4.0 GPAs and shared the school's Female Scholar Athlete of the Year award with swimmer Abby Puczkowski.Burge, a Newbury Park High graduate, turned down a basketball scholarship offer from Westmont to attend UCLA as a Regents Scholar. Graham, a Ventura High product, has transferred to Occidental. Both plan to continue playing.Freshman Autumn Brobrisky also earned a 4.0 GPA."You get a sense of pride for the kids when you look at the schools that come on and off that list," Mircetic said. "Each group has maintained a certain level of excellence in the classroom."Solano (three times) and Cypress (twice) are the only other California teams to appear on the list over the past decade.Moorpark starsMoorpark College honored 107 student-athletes who achieved a 3.0 or better GPA during their season of sport last year during a dinner June 28 at Moorpark Country Club.Nearly 20 percent of those honorees were from the football team, which had 21 3.0 students -- including two with perfect 4.0s -- and a 2.87 迷你倉出租PA as a team."We're trying to get the right guys on campus, get them to study hall and take average of all the tools that Moorpark offers," Moorpark coach Will Thurston said.Twelve Raiders achieved 4.0 GPAs: Hayley Moore (cross country, track); Brittnie Blanchard and Brittany Sharpe (volleyball); Javier Aguilar and Mason McCormick (football); Roberto Naranjo (men's soccer); Samantha Murphy (women's soccer); Samantha McCarthy (women's basketball) Shay Boloor (men's basketball), Taylor Cartwright, Amanda Chatman and Marti Lewis (softball).Moore, a distance runner from Simi Valley, achieved the feat twice -- during cross country and track. She has transferred to UCLA.Ramljak honoredOf course, the academic hurdles don't end with the completion of an associate's degree.Former Ventura College basketball player Austin Ramljak, an Oak Park High product, has continued to shine since transferring to Rice University.Ramljak, who started the final 17 games as a junior and led the Owls in 3-pointers (72) and 3-point shooting (37.2 percent), was named Conference USA's Scholar Athlete of the Year for men's basketball.Still swimmingNatasha Tang's swimming season didn't end with her women's Swimmer of the Year nod at the CCCAA state championships April 27.The Ventura College distance swimmer swept the Asian Open Water Swimming Championships, hosted by Kapchagay, Kazakastan, in June. She won the 5k race in 1 hour, 6 minutes, 19.06 seconds, and a few days later came back to win the 10k in 2:13:48.93.At last month's World University Games in Kazan, Russia, Tang finished 16th (2:17:43) in the 10k open water swim, despite being affected by 84-degree water temperatures which caused cramping and heat stroke symptoms.American Ashley Twitchell, formerly of Duke, won the gold medal in 2:05:01.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 Ventura County Star (Camarillo, Calif.)
