Williams, chairman emeritus of the Orange County Historical Commission, said the organization had been working toward getting the state historic marker for at least two years.According to the text on plaque, the No. 1 Bland well, drilled by Rio Bravo Oil Co. in 1913 produced about 150 barrels of oil per day. At 3,207-3,223 feet deep, the "wonder well" was the deepest well in Texas at that time. But in 1921, an even bigger gusher came in at Chesson No. 5, drilled by Humble Oil. The well, on a hill on the west side of Cow Bayou near the old bridge, produced 15,000 barrels a d迷你倉價錢y.This is where the goats came in, when Oscar Chesson wouldn't sell his farm "for all the oil in the oil field" because he wouldn't abandon his ailing goats. The wildcatting set off by the massive success of Chesson No. 5 let to the discovery of the Orange oil field, and the subsequent boom led to the growth of the town. Wooden roads were built to allow heavy oil field equipment to be hauled into the marshy coastal plains of Orange County. The Orangefield Post Office opened in 1922.But the next few years were difficult for the community, which was hit by fires and a tornado, and by 1925, most of the drilling crews were gone.Hurricanes Audrey, Rita and Ike subsequently obliterated all that was left of the old derricks along Cow Bayou -- but the waning of the oil boom wasn't the end of the community, which is now centered on the Orangefield Independent School District, the churches, businesses and homes of the residents.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Beaumont Enterprise (Beaumont, Texas) Visit the Beaumont Enterprise (Beaumont, Texas) at .beaumontenterprise.com Distributed by MCT Information Services迷你倉庫
