In such difficult cases, the Air Force calls in local engineer Justin Ogden.His phone rang at 2 a.m. Monday. A family of six -- including four children ages 3 to 10 years old -- disappeared in a remote region of Nevada. Using his specialized talents, Ogden unearthed the clue that led to everyone's safe return.Ogden is an expert in cellular forensics for the Civil Air Patrol, the volunteer civilian auxiliary to the U.S. Air Force. He is one of only two such experts working for CAP in the continental U.S. and has attained the rank of major in his 20 years with the organization."[Using cellular forensics] has become so routine in search and rescue," said Nevada CAP Wing Commander Tim Hahn."Search and rescue has become very digital."In the recent case in Nevada, a family drove out to the rugged, mountainous Seven Troughs region Sunday but never returned.Shortly after the search began, authorities called in Ogden, who looked for cell phone signals in the area -- which has very little service -- to try to track the group and discern their possible location. He was in a race against the clock as temperatures dipped to 20 degrees below zero."This is time-critical. Time is of the essence," he said.Ogden described his job as mining cell phone data and building a map to help guide rescue efforts.Monday evening he found the critical clue -- a signal from a remote cell tower. He used the tower's coverage area to direct rescuers on the ground to a more precise search location. It was not where the party had told friends they were heading, nor was it close to the last place they were spotted.Rescuers sent a team to the site Ogden described where they found an SUV that had gone off the road and up an embankment before rolling into a ditch mini storagend landing upside-down.For 20 minutes after the discovery of the vehicle, Ogden waited in Lynchburg for word of the family in Nevada.Then the text came -- "Six saves.""It was very exciting. ... It's incredible. I can't imagine being stuck out there myself two nights," Ogden said."[When searches last more than two nights] we're pretty worried about what the outcome is going to be."That dedication to recovering the lost has united Ogden with rescue crews across the country."There's kind of a kinship there -- 'We're not giving up on this one,'" Hahn said.It's work that keeps Ogden busy. He estimates he has helped with more than 400 searches since he began the work in 2006."I'm surprised I haven't had another one since this happened," he said Thursday afternoon.Many of those rescues don't end as happily. Ogden estimates about half his searches are for missing small aircraft. He described the crashes as generally "unforgiving."Often, local authorities do not call in the military for assistance until the case of a missing person is several days old, Ogden said. And as each day passes, survival chances drop, he continued.But that's changing as rescue crews see what Ogden and his partner, Brian Ready, can do. He estimates he's helped in over 100 cases just this year. He reimbursed only NZ$263, on October 25 last year, for personal use.But the auditors found that some or all of the calls may have been madeself storagein Chuang’s capacity as a member of Auckland’s Ethnic Peoples Advisory Panel.He was cleared of using his influence to aid Chuang in her appointment to the panel, which she joined before the pair met, or to her job at the city’s art gallery.Brown said he welcomed the findings, adding: “However, I accept that as mayor I am subject to a higher standard of public accountability, and in this context I should not have accepted the free rooms offered to me, and should have disclosed this fact.“This was an error of judgment and I apologise to the people of Auckland.”An aspiring politician, Chuang, 32, studied at the Chinese International School in North Point until 1996, when she emigrated with family members to New Zealand.Although she has made New Zealand her home, Chuang keeps close ties with Hong Kong. She has links with many New Zealand-based Chinese community groups, including the New Zealand Chinese Association Auckland.Chuang states on her LinkedIn page that through her career – in media and business – she has had “significant community involvement with a focus on the celebration and integration of Chinese and other migrant communities within Auckland”.Speaking on a radio interview shortly after the affair became public in October, she said: “I don’t need to be someone’s toy. Source: Dayton Daily News, OhioDec.mini storage 13--Each time Miami Twp. fire investigators and insurance adjusters returned to Cena Brazilian Steakhouse in Miami Twp. to investigate a 2009 vandalism complaint by its owner, Eva Christian, they discovered escalating amounts of damage to the place that wasn't there on previous visits, according to Montgomery County prosecutors, who this week filed their rebuttal to Christian's appeal of her conviction and sentencing.Christian, the former owner of the now-defunct Boulevard Haus (previously Cafe Boulevard) restaurant in Dayton's Oregon District for a decade, was convicted May 22, 2012 of five felony counts related to two incidents of insurance fraud, including the suspcious and escalating damage at her restaurant. The case revolved around break-ins and a fire during 2009 that Christian reported and which prosecutors said were staged in order to collect insurance money: a reported break-in at her Washington Twp. home and a reported vandalism and fire at Cena restaurant near the Dayton Mall.On Aug. 1,2013, Christian's court-appointed attorney, Brock Schoenlein, filed an appeal with the Ohio 2nd District Court of Appeals asking the court to overturn Christian's five felony convictions. Schoenlein contended that the trial court judge, Montgomery County Common Pleas Judge Barbara Gorman, made multiple errors during Christian's May 2012 trial that should prompt the appeals court to order a new trial or to shorten Christian's prison sentence.The attorney argued that the jury's guilty-on-all-counts verdict was "against the weight of the evidence" presented at the three-week trial, and that Judge Gorman improperly allowed prosecutors to introduce as evidence items seized during a search warrant that was based on a flawed affidavit, and imposed a prison sentence that was too harsh because the judge failed to take into consiself storageeration changes in Ohio sentencing laws that occurred after the crimes were committed but before Christian was convicted and sentenced.Testimony by prosecution witnesses during the trial suggested that Christian conspired with two accomplices."Christian was the boss of the operation," prosecutors said in their appeals rebuttal. "She came up with the plan to burglarize her house and vandalize her restaurant so that she could file an insurance claim and receive a large payout. She specified the details of the plan, i.e., when it would be accomplished, how it would be accomplished, and what each of them would do."Prosecutors contended there was ample evidence to convict Christian and defended the search warrant and affidavit that led to the warrant as valid and justified. On the sentencing issue, however, prosecutors acknowledged that the appeals court had sided with defendants in the past on similar cases, and asked the appeals court to withhold its ruling until a related case that is pending before the Ohio Supreme Court is decided.During her sentencing hearing last year, Christian -- who testified at her trial and denied wrongdoing -- remained defiant about the jury's decision to convict her, saying she "cannot confess to a crime I have not committed." Judge Gorman denied Christian's request to avoid a prison sentence, calling Christian "a dangerous person" and told the former restaurant owner, "I don't think you have a conscience."No date has been set yet for oral arguments before the appeals court.
