Drillers rally to reach state title game
Source: The Bakersfield CalifornianDec.self storage 14--SAN MARCOS -- For months, Bakersfield High drained the drama from its games, routing teams before the fourth quarter had started and generally making high school football look easy. There was none of that here Friday night, not with Mission Hills leading most of the way and the BHS fighting from behind. But time after time, when the Drillers needed a play, they found one, and they left with a 35-28 victory over the host Grizzlies in the CIF Southern California Division I regional bowl game."We did what we did the whole season," said senior quarterback Asauni Rufus, who was 10-for-10 passing for 224 yards and ran for the game-winning touchdown with 51 seconds left. "That's what we've been training to do. The whole night, it was just like, 'OK, we got to battle back.'"Rufus set up his 1-yard winner with a 47-yard pass to Derrick Vickers in the final two minutes, and then Vickers intercepted Mission Hills quarterback Connor Wynn with 35 seconds left to seal victory. The Drillers play the Northern Cal champion, Loomis-Del Oro, in the Division I state bowl championship at 8 p.m. Friday at the StubHub Center in Carson."It's surreal," Bakersfield coach Paul Golla said. "We talked about it in January when we started the season. And what's awesome is that this is life, too. If you work hard and make sacrifices, you're going to be successful."Bakersfield (12-2) made a couple of first-half sacrifices it would like to take back: Two fumbles inside the Mission Hills 5-yard line. The Grizzlies (12-2) recovered both and led 14-7 at halftime on the strength of two Wynn touchdown passes."When you turn the ball over twice, you already have a 78 percent chance of losing," Golla said. "So that's in the back of your head. But we were moving the ball, and we knew we had to keep going."Bakersfield tied the game late in the third quarter on a 1-yard Jeremiah Reddick run -- but Mission Hills answered with Wynn's 44-yard running touchdown on the first play of the fourth."Word coming out of (Bakersfield) was that it would be a boat race," Mission Hills coach Chris Hauser said. "There were some pretty mean, cruel things said on some (websites) up there, and you know what? We come ready to play. We have tremendous respect for Bakersfield and that community, and we hope that (Bakersfield) gained some respect for us."Back and forth the teams went. Lameshio Hill caught a Rufus pass along the sideline, fought off two defenders and scored 迷你倉rom 51 yards away to tie the game, 21-21, with 10:53 left. But Wynn, who threw for 223 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 98 yards and two more scores, ran for a 31-yard touchdown and a 28-21 Mission Hills lead with 6:13 remaining."This hurts a lot," Wynn said. "It was my last game in high school, and it'll sting for a while. I thought we played as well as we could. They played a great game, too. Their offense is really good. They have great playmakers everywhere, and their defense is very exotic. We'd never seen anything like it."Trailing by a touchdown, Bakersfield stuck to its running-game roots, getting a 27-yard run from Rufus, who finished with 72 rushing yards, and then a 13-yard run around left end from Reddick to tie the game. Then, the BHS defense forced three straight incompletions for the first time all night and got the ball back. Rufus' key deep ball to Vickers came on second-and-13. Vickers got behind the defense, caught the ball in stride and fell to the Mission Hills 13-yard line."Our wide receivers, if it's one-on-one, we feel like we're going to take it," said Vickers, who finished with seven catches for 101 yards. "We feel like nobody can guard us. Asauni puts it up, and we go get it."At that point, Rufus' perfect passing night was complete, and the senior who's headed to Nevada as a defensive back proved he can throw the ball a little bit, too."People don't know that I've trained my whole life to play quarterback," said Rufus, who completed 9 of 10 passes in the Central Section championship game. "I've spent countless hours working on footwork, doing drills with Derek Carr, by myself, all the time. People don't know, but I don't pay attention. I know I can play quarterback."Three plays later, Rufus put the Drillers ahead for the first time since the game's opening drive. Then Vickers ended it with a pick."We're in a state championship game," Golla said. "How rare is that?"Here's how rare: Bakersfield will play in a state championship game for the first time since 1927, when what was then known as Kern County Union High School beat Fullerton for its sixth state title. The state didn't hold another state championship game until 2006."Hard work pays off," Rufus said. "We're excited. And with God's blessing, we'll have a state title."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Bakersfield Californian (Bakersfield, Calif.)

Opposing portraits of med pot operation
Source: The Record, Stockton, Calif. Dec. 14--STOCKTON -- Stockton businessman Matthew Davies was ordered Friday by a U.S. District Court judge to surrender himself to a federal prison on March 3 and serve a five-year sentence for his role in manufacturing medical marijuana and distributing it through multiple dispensaries in Stockton and Sacramento.Davies, 36, likely will spend his time performing dairy farm work at a minimum-security facility in Lompoc. He pleaded guilty in June to federal drug charges dating back to 2010.His sentencing and upcoming prison time mark the conclusion of a three-year saga that has pitted federal drug laws against state-approved laws that allow for medical marijuana sales, Davies said, describing his operations as being "under the letter of California law."Davies said he "takes full responsibility for his actions" but maintains that he believed his businesses were clean. He paid more than $1 million to advisers, lawyers and auditors to keep it that way, he said.On the other side, U.S. Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner said Davies and his partners were building a $10 million "marijuana empire" in a short amount of time and opened their businesses for sheer profit. Wagner said some of Davies' operations underreported income, and that even though he reported a $37,500 salary over 18 months, significantly more money was taken and reinvested to expand his medical marijuana businesses."He keeps saying he made ($37,500). We just disagree," Wagner said. "He has spent a lot of time and money with advisers portraying himself as not having made any money, but he was building a chain of marijuana businesses that were setting up for a lucrative future."Wagner didn't provide specifics, only that $160,000 was seized during the investigation. Otherwise, he said he wasn't interested in a public debate with Davies over the money trail.Davies this week has opened up about his dispensaries, which include the Stockton-based Central Valley Caregivers Cooperative and four others. In an interview with The Record, he described himself as a businessman who loves Stockton and deeply cares how the public here perceives him.His position: He is an educated businessman who partook in an industry that could help patients get medicine. He thought the business was shielded by the Obama administration's guidelines, outlined in a memo stating federal prosecutors would not go after medical marijuana dispensaries in states that allow them. When the drug charges were levied against him, he said he was "whipsawed.""First thing I want to say is, I love this town and I'm going to live here for the next 50 years. I care deeply what this town thinks about me, and I want people to know the whole story," Davies said. "I want people to see me as a great guy, as a great husband and father. I didn't believe I was doing anything wrong."Still, he said, he is accepting of his sentence. Taking his case to a federal court trial was a non-starter, because the jury would have been instructed that there is no such thing as legal marijuana sales under federal laws. A five-year sentence was the best option, he said."I take complete responsibility for my actions," said the father of two young girls, Rowan, 2, and Rebecca, 1. "If this went to trial, they'd ask, 'Did you sell marijuana?' My answer is 'yes,' so that's it."Davies, whose father is Stockton businessman Bruce Davies, said he was prosecuted because his business became large scale an迷你倉 because he has a master's degree. The feds don't want smart businessmen to invest in medical marijuana nonprofit groups, he said. His businesses generated $10 million in revenue over a year and a half, he said, and that meant heavy scrutiny. He didn't get rich, he said, drawing only a $37,500 salary for himself over that time and roughly $30,000 in salary to his wife, Molly. The rest went into the large overhead of operating a medical marijuana business, he said. The companies showed a $300,000 profit, according to Davies, which equates to a 3 percent reserve fund that is allowable under nonprofit group guidelines."I was labeled as a 'genius' for growing the business so quickly and as an idiot who couldn't do that much business without getting money back for myself," he said. "I was scheduled to make $75,000 a year, which is commensurate with a nonprofit of this size. The CEO of Goodwill makes $250,000 a year because it's commensurate with that nonprofit organization. That is allowed."His case is different than that of Hayward man Winslow Norton, Davies said. In that case, police seized $600,000, fancy cars and real estate in relation to a $50 million-plus operation, according to the Contra Costa Times.Davies said his company paid $500,000 in taxes and employed 50 people at an average of $15 an hour, wages he said are strong for the retail sales industry. Investigators never found large sums of cash, hidden bank accounts or other signs of a lucrative business, he said."They didn't find nothing like that with me. I was in 100 percent compliance," he said. What investigators did find was the $160,000 referred to by Wagner.Davies explains that amount as $100,000 in an account reserved for legal fees, $20,000 that was to be used for employee payroll and $40,000 for operating expenses.Davies said he paid his lawyers $250,000 for his defense.Wagner said California laws regarding medical marijuana are more murky than the media and public realize. He said his office doesn't have the time or resources to chase after every operation.Davies became the target of an investigation after a burglary was reported at one of his grow operations inside a large east Stockton warehouse, not because federal prosecutors sought him out, Wagner said."He knew what he was doing was in violation of federal law. He gambled that we wouldn't care," Wagner said. "Mr. Davies was pretty active in the marijuana area in terms of a business model. He even purchased a dispensary in Elk Grove where police had arrested the previous owner. He was building an empire."Wagner went further, saying a five-year sentence is rather lenient in large-scale drug cases. He said his office is trying to prosecute cases such as this in a fair way because he knows there's a level of confusion with what is and isn't legal under state versus federal laws.Davies said five years is "a lifetime" for a man with a wife and young kids. He's hopeful that his time in prison won't be detrimental to his daughters."How old were you when you had your first memory?" Davies asked. "Around 4 years old? My hope is that I can do this sentence, and then I can come home and move forward."Contact reporter Keith Reid at (209) 546-8257 or kreid@recordnet.com. Visit his blog at .recordnet.com/lodiblog.
mini storage

Kuwait Times, Muna Al-Fuzai column
Source: Kuwait TimesDec. 14--It is becoming very common to hear or read about shootings in Kuwait. I know some may think we should not be surprised over such news because the whole world is in a mess and people are being killed every day by gunfire. But we are not in a war zone or area of conflicts, so we naturally consider the news of people being killed by guns as a serious matter.More people are firing guns, especially during wedding celebrations, as a gesture to express their joy, but they are not considering the fact that someone can get hurt and injured! Recently, a young Kuwaiti was killed in Wafra by a gunshot during a fight with his friends. I agree, crimes can occur by various weapons and means. But the fact that anyone can buy a gun will make it easy to use it against others. There is no way but to have a campaign to collect weapons from civilians. I know that there have been some calls to do so that never succeeded. I think such campaigns will do well if we are serious about it. It is becoming well known to the public how much are guns worth. This should be an indicator that there is a black market for guns for people to buy, and here is the question -- why would anybody want to buy a gun and for what reason? I can't think of anybody who seeks to buy a gun which could cost him big amount of money just for pleasure. I think with my simple mind that he may plan to use it at a later time. What other reason would lead him to buy a gun? Such 迷你倉eople must be arrested and questioned and this should include all, even the ones who fire guns at weddings as a gesture to express their happiness. Somebody could get shot and possibly get killed, so I don't see any fun in such kind of celebrations! This is an old Arab habit when people were living in a desert. Right now, no one lives in a desert and they live in crowded areas full of people and pedestrians. This is why I believe it is a must for the ministry of interior to be serious about seizing guns from the public and track the sources who make it easy for people to buy them. I also think the media should be involved by taking a bigger role in awareness campaigns in cooperation with MoI by enforcing laws against all users of guns. A news item appeared recently about a young Kuwaiti who was shot dead in Um Safak and his charred body was found in the desert. The news was all over the social media and raised many questions about how many weapons are available with no one to stop or enforce laws against those who get to buy weapons and use it against others without supervision. In every country, there are restrictions and regulations on purchase of guns. Those who break these laws get tracked and punished for carrying illegal weapons without a license. This is what we should do as well.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Kuwait Times (Safat, Kuwait) Visit the Kuwait Times (Safat, Kuwait) at .kuwaittimes.net/ Distributed by MCT Information Servicesself storage

The scammers threaten those who refuse to pay with arrest, deportation or loss of a business or driver's license.Callers commiting this fraud often use common names and fake IRS badge numbers, know the last four digits of the victim's Social Security number, make caller ID information appear as if the IRS is calling, send bogus IRS emails to support this scam and call a second time claiming to be the police or DMV -- caller ID again supporting their claims.Truth: The IRS usually contacts people by mail first -- not by phone -- about unpaid taxes. The IRS never asks for payment using prepaid debit cards or wire transfers. The agency also won't ask存倉for a credit card number over the phone. If you get a call from someone claiming to be with the IRS asking for a payment, hang up.

Pesky winter colds take simple remedies
Source: American News, Aberdeen, S.迷你倉D.Dec. 12--With winter here, many folks find themselves grinding through coughs and colds. Two specialists say it's a common cold that's going around, and will take tried-and-true remedies. Some of the contributing factors to winter colds and coughs are spending more time indoors and in close quarters with people, said Amy Dwight, a nurse and clinical supervisor of the family medicine department at Sanford Aberdeen Medical Center. Long work weeks, stress and not getting enough sleep also play a part, she said."Right now, this time of the year with more people being inside and being around more people, it become easier for colds to spread," said Kayla Daniels, physician assistant at Avera St. Luke's FastCare at Kessler's. "For example colds can spread from respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing, and it can be easier to pick that up being in close vicinities with other people."Staying indoors and being in close contact with each other can make people more susceptible to coming in contact with viruses, especially with children."With the temps below zero, kids aren't going out for recess which means spending more time indoors doing hands on activities and passing things back and forth, that can be a common way that colds spread," Dwight said. Both specialists emphasized the importance of good hand hygiene."The most basic, first-hand line of defense is washing your hands," Dwight said. "If you're somewhere where it's hard to wash your hands, the hand sanitizers work really well. They're easy to throw in your purse or diaper bag," she said, noting that hand sanitizers are available in stores and offices, and sanitizer wipes are offered to wipe down shopping carts."Even just pushing a shopping cart, you could pick up a cold that way as well," Dmini storageniels said. "Good hand hygiene, that's the No. 1 thing. Washing hands with soap and warm water or getting a good hand sanitizer can help especially after you cough or sneeze into your hands." Daniels also said to cough or sneeze into your elbow instead of your hands, which is especially important for children. As for advice for people battling winter colds Dwight said drinking plenty of fluids and getting plenty of rest is important, as well as humidifiers and warm compresses, hot showers or baths, or even just a warm wash cloth over the bridge of the nose of forehead to relieve some tension and loosen things up. Gargling salt water or saline rinses for a home remedy can also be helpful for sinuses and soar throats, she said. Both specialists said if a cold continues to worsen and a fever comes with a temp in the range of 100 degrees or over to see your primary doctor.Over-the-counter medicine can help too, Dwight said. But it is important to make sure if you are taking any prescribed medicines to check with your doctor first, she said. Also, it can be helpful to talk to the pharmacist and tell them your symptoms and ask what recommendation of cold medicine they may be able to help with."I can't stress enough that most colds are viruses and antibiotics aren't needed, it just takes good old-fashioned time," Daniels said. "During a common cold its just important to get plenty of rest and stay hydrated." She also encouraged getting the flu shot this season to help combat illness. Both specialists said they always are willing to answer questions over the phone for those who are concerned.Follow @AnnieKing_AAN on Twitter.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 American News (Aberdeen, S.D.) Reading mayor wants changes to administrative code
Source: Reading Eagle, Pa.mini storageDec. 13--Wading once more into the muddy waters of the city's 600-page Administrative Code, Charter Review Commission members on Wednesday battled over whether it gives City Council too much control over the minute details of administrative offices.Mayor Vaughn D. Spencer insists it does. He noted Section 601 of the code -- adopted by council -- allows council to determine "the internal procedures for the operation of the departments, offices and agencies," and "any other rules, regulations and procedures reasonably appropriate for efficient administration."That encroaches upon the mayor's authority, said Spencer, who wants to transform the council-approved code into a mayor-approved administrative manual that he can change as needs arise.Arguing the other side, Councilwoman Marcia Goodman-Hinnershitz said all home-rule charters require administrative codes, which pick up where the charter leaves off."It's clear that the Transition Committee wanted to provide the mayor with less flexibilityself storageand provide more control points for council," she said of the 1996 panel that wrote the city code.Spencer claimed the real problem is that neither the charter nor the code clearly spells out the separation of powers between the mayor and council."Council can come in and change anything the administration or the mayor does," said Eron Lloyd, Spencer's special assistant. The commission's mandate is to recommend changes to the charter, not city ordinances such as the code. However, since the charter requires the code, some members believe they should change the charter to split up the legislative and administrative duties in the code."I cannot imagine how this would ever be presented to the public," said member Thomas Anewalt. "It's too complicated; it's asking an awful lot of the average informed voter."Contact Don Spatz: 610-371-5027 or dspatz@readingeagle.com.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 Reading Eagle (Reading, Pa.)
