Health care tech investments attract Life Sciences Greenhouse
Source: Pittsburgh Post-GazetteAug. 23--When John Manzetti came aboard as Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse CEO in 2006, the organization had a major hole in its portfolio -- not a single investment in the emerging field of health care information technology."We had zero companies, because we didn't have anybody to chase" the money, Mr. Manzetti said.Follow the money isn't just a Watergate catchphrase -- it's the guiding rule when it comes to soliciting investor capital. And for the last several years, investors in the health market have been telling the South Side greenhouse to invest in health care IT.Greenhouses like these solicit money from potential investors and then steer seed capital to start-ups. Since its formation in 2001 as a joint partnership among the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, UPMC, Pittsburgh's regional foundation community and the state of Pennsylvania, the Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse has invested $19 million in more than 80 companies."The money wants to follow something that has a little more certainty [and] clarity as to how that gets to commercialization," Mr. Manzetti said. The biggest chunks of the organization's $19 million portfolio -- medical devices, therapeutics, biotech tools -- usually need Food and Drug Administration clearance before they can get to market.Apps and software, on the other hand, do not. That's why, at least when it comes to the greenhouse's investments, biotech tools, devices and diagnostic technology segments are stagnant, while health IT is growing. It's one of the only segments that is attracting new venture capital, here or nationally, leading to tough times all around for life sciences.Venture capital is fleeing the segment thanks to poor returns -- therapeutic medicines in particular can take a decade, plus a billion dollars in research and trials, before they get to market. Most don't even make it that far, given the sector's failure rates. As a result, life science start-ups as well and the greenhouses that fund them are scrambling for money, particularly since the recession. That's one reason the Pittsburgh greenhouse is downsizing, announcing this summer that it would cut four staff positions and shed half of its office space. For life sciences research and development, "a lot of things changed after the crash," said Stephanie Marrus, director of the Entrepreneurship Center at the University of California, San Francisco. She said 2007 was the peak and 50 percent of the venture capital in the life sciences realm has disappeared since then. With diminished resources available, investing in IT looks safer and cheaper."Digital health [is] an easier way to play in this game," Ms. Marrus said. If someone can build a new health app, they can "escape the challenges of developing a new drug."Today, the Pittsburgh greenhouse has about $2 million tied up in various companies in the health IT realm, a sector that is broadening by the day. Top of mind, health information technology might suggest the t新蒲崗迷你倉ols that connect doctors, insurers and hospitals, allowing them to share records -- but there's far more to it than that.Just look at three of the greenhouse's seven most recent investments, totalling $315,000 in the first half of 2013.PHRQL Inc. (pronounced "freckle," meaning Personal Health Recording for Quality of Life) is a software and records company working on a new technology that will allow dietitians to track a patient's eating habits via grocery store purchases.NewCare Solutions is working on sensors that can monitor senior citizens remotely for caregivers or even adult children, tracking kitchen usage, water consumption, utilities, even lighting and TV use, in home or institutional settings. And Wellbridge Health is a small Pittsburgh company working on technology to better track patient care in order to reduce costly hospital readmissions. The life sciences research field generally breaks down into five broad categories: therapeutics (drugs and medicines), diagnostics (tools and tests to diagnose diseases), biotech tools (devices to cure and monitor diseases), medical devices (such as implants, joints and prosthetics) and health IT (hardware, software and health-related mobile devices and apps).Mr. Manzetti noted the shift toward funding more health care IT technologies was a decision made more easily in Pittsburgh, given the strength of the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University spin-offs.Other, separate greenhouses may have their own regional strengths: The Life Sciences Greenhouse of Central Pennsylvania can still invest in lots of medical devices coming out of Penn State, while BioAdvance, the life science greenhouse in Philadelphia, has a lot of therapeutics to choose from.On the whole, health care information technology looks promising, even if that promise has not yet rewarded investors with reliable returns."The giant sucking sound you hear is money moving from life sciences into social media," said Steve Blank, author and expert on Silicon Valley entrepreneurship and start-ups.He, like many in the field, say the federal government, which spends more than $100 million on applied research every year, needs to likewise invest in the commercialization of that research -- otherwise, the U.S. cedes the life sciences and therapeutics field to China and Singapore, while our own capital pursues "fad-based investment.""Congress doesn't understand that 9 out of 10 start-ups fail," Mr. Blank said, referencing Solyndra, the California manufacturer of solar panels that filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, costing taxpayers $385 million in unreturned load money. "They'd rather play gotcha."As for Pittsburgh's decision to take a harder look at health IT, Mr. Blank said it was an inevitable choice."Why would they continue to push Jell-o uphill?" he said.Bill Toland: btoland@post-gazette.com or 412-263-2625.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Visit the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette at .post-gazette.com Distributed by MCT Information Servicesmini storage

American, US Airways push for November trial date on merger
Source: Tulsa World, Okla. Aug. 23--American Airlines and US Airways want a November trial date to fight the Justice Department's antitrust lawsuit, three months earlier than the government wanted. The airlines Thursday requested that the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., schedule a Nov. 12 trial date. According to their motion, the Department of Justice was hoping to be in court as early as Feb. 10, but the airlines want to speed up arguments, move on with their merger and save on legal costs. The airlines' filing notes that the Justice Department's lawsuit has delayed American's bankruptcy case and contends that every extra day creates another $500,000 in legal fees for American in that case alone."The urgency to complete their transaction is far greater here than in ordinary merger cases," the airlines' lawyers state in their filing. "The government cannot justify its unprecedentedly slow trial schedule."In its lawsuit filed last week, the Justice Department alleges that a merger would violate antitrust law and cost consumers billions of dollars in higher ticket prices. The merger would create the world's largest airline and further consolidate the industry in the U.S. into just four dominant airlines.US Airways CEO Doug Parker would be president and CEO of the new carrier, which would be called American Airlines."Along with our colleagues at American Airlines, we are looking forward to proving in a court what all of us have known all along -- that this merger is good for competition and as a result, extremely good for consumers," Parker said in a letter to US Airways employees Thursday.American Airlines has some 6,300 employees in Tulsa, mainly at its Maintenance & Engineering Center at Tulsa International Airport. The facility is the company's primary jet engine迷你倉出租overhaul and maintenance base."The request for a November trial date also reflects our strong, unwavering belief in our merger with US Airways and in our legal case," American Airlines CEO Tom Horton said in a memo to employees. "Simply put: We're ready to go."Lawyers for both the Justice Department and the airlines have vowed to take the lawsuit to trial and have refused to make settlement offers. In his letter to workers, Horton said American wants to finish its reorganization, which began with a bankruptcy filing in November 2011.In the wake of the Justice Department's lawsuit, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Sean Lane of New York has asked that American Airlines and other groups in the case explain how the lawsuit could alter the carrier's reorganization plan.A November trial date could also preempt a provision in the airlines' merger agreement that allows either side to abandon the deal as of Dec. 13 if regulatory hurdles have not been cleared. What's new in the antitrust case? The lawsuit: The Justice Department is suing to block the merger of American Airlines and US Airways, which would create the world's largest airline. Government antitrust lawyers say the merger would hurt competition and cost consumers billions in higher fares. What happened Thursday?: American and US Airways asked a federal court to set a Nov. 12 trial date, three months earlier than the Justice Department wanted. Why it matters?: The airlines want to speed up the antitrust case, finish American's bankruptcy reorganization and, eventually, close the merger. Delays will cost millions in legal fees, they say.Kyle Arnold 918-581-8380kyle.arnold@tulsaworld.comCopyright: ___ (c)2013 Tulsa World (Tulsa, Okla.) Orangefield celebrates oil centennial
Source: The Beaumont Enterprise, TexasAug. 22--Wooden roads, a couple of big oil strikes and some sick goats are all part of the history of the tiny community of Orangefield, and all were honored in centennial celebration on Saturday, when the Orange County Historical Commission dedicated a historical marker commemorating its oil boom roots. The celebration included a frontier gunfight reenactment, gusher replica, live music, barbecue dinner and events for the kids, with festivities in and around the Orange County Museum.Dr. Howard C. Williams, chairman emeritus of the Orange County Historical Commission, said the organization had been working toward getting the state historic marker for at least two years.According to the text on plaque, the No. 1 Bland well, drilled by Rio Bravo Oil Co. in 1913 produced about 150 barrels of oil per day. At 3,207-3,223 feet deep, the "wonder well" was the deepest well in Texas at that time. But in 1921, an even bigger gusher came in at Chesson No. 5, drilled by Humble Oil. The well, on a hill on the west side of Cow Bayou near the old bridge, produced 15,000 barrels a d迷你倉價錢y.This is where the goats came in, when Oscar Chesson wouldn't sell his farm "for all the oil in the oil field" because he wouldn't abandon his ailing goats. The wildcatting set off by the massive success of Chesson No. 5 let to the discovery of the Orange oil field, and the subsequent boom led to the growth of the town. Wooden roads were built to allow heavy oil field equipment to be hauled into the marshy coastal plains of Orange County. The Orangefield Post Office opened in 1922.But the next few years were difficult for the community, which was hit by fires and a tornado, and by 1925, most of the drilling crews were gone.Hurricanes Audrey, Rita and Ike subsequently obliterated all that was left of the old derricks along Cow Bayou -- but the waning of the oil boom wasn't the end of the community, which is now centered on the Orangefield Independent School District, the churches, businesses and homes of the residents.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Beaumont Enterprise (Beaumont, Texas) Visit the Beaumont Enterprise (Beaumont, Texas) at .beaumontenterprise.com Distributed by MCT Information Services迷你倉庫

Infamous drug lord with ties to bloody Mexican cartel back in Memphis court Thursday
Source: The Commercial Appeal, Memphis, Tenn. Aug. 21--Craig Petties is used to being in control. Before his arrest, the infamous drug lord, believed to be one of the richest and most deadly dealers in Memphis history, had an organization of people who followed his orders or paid the price, sometimes with their lives.Petties, a high school drop out who grew up in the impoverished Riverside neighborhood in South Memphis, emerged as a multimillionaire and ran an international trafficking empire that funneled hundreds of kilos of cocaine and more than a ton of marijuana from Mexico into Tennessee and other Southern states. Anyone who was perceived as a threat to the business -- including one of Petties' beloved cousins -- was silenced with bullets. Now, through two lawyers, the 36-year-old is angling for control of his court case, a dozen years after his initial arrest. The man who remained a federal fugitive for five years is asking a judge to force prosecutors to shave time off his sentence because he spared them the expense of a trial by pleading guilty in 2009 to racketeering and murder charges, and because he spilled secrets about other crimes to aid other investigations.U.S. Dist. Judge Samuel "Hardy" Mays is expected to sentence Petties, who faces life in a federal prison, during a hearing Thursday.Prosecutors are fighting back, arguing during previous court hearings that while Petties has cooperated to some extent, he still isn't revealing all he knows about murders and other crimes in Memphis or in Mexico. For instance, Petties claimed he was in bed asleep on April, 21, 2002 when one of his hit men fired 10 shots at Petties' cousin, Antonio Allen, outside a South Memphis home. Investigators say they're sure Petties gave the orders to kill Allen, erroneously thinking Allen had become a government witness.Petties and the hit man served as pallbearers at the victim's funeral.Another problem for Petties, because he remained a federal fugitive for years, is that much of what he has said came too late -- after his minions disclosed many of the same details about the drug ring to reduce their own sentences.Through the years, more than 40 Petties' associates have pleaded guilty and received prison stints, causing members who were friends since childhood to turn against one another. Many secrets of their underworld still remain hidden in sealed court documents, further protected when Mays closed portions of hearings to reporters and the public. Yet a glimpse has been gradually revealed during the past decade in police reports, hearings and unsealed court records.Organization members have testified how they followed Petties' orders to kill an associate who became a key government witness. And police listened in on jail phone calls between drug-ring members who were discussing plans to kill the lead investigators, Abe Collins, a special agent with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, and Memphis police detective Therman Richardson.A jury convicted two of Petties' enforcers, the only ones who demanded a trial, last year, and both were sentenced this summer to life sentences in federal prisons. A sign of the volatile nature of the drug ring: jurors' names were shielded even from the judge, and armed deputy U.S. Marshals escorted them from an undisclosed location before and after court each day of the six-week trial.Spectators, including the mother of a victim who was kidnapped, tortured for days and murdered, watched the trial eight floors below the courtroom in a r儲存倉om protected by an additional security checkpoint and rigged with video conference equipment that never showed jurors' faces.Prosecutors had to wait to prosecute one lingering associate, Christopher Hamlett, a childhood friend of Petties who became part of the drug leader's inner circle. Hamlett, 36, who spent five years in a Mexican prison, was sentenced in Memphis earlier this month. As part of his plea deal, which landed him a 15-year sentence, he connected several murders in Mexico to Petties, Asst. U.S. Atty. David Pritchard said. Those are murders Petties didn't tell prosecutors about.A third factor that could have hurt Petties' chances at a reduced sentence: He has caused problems behind bars.He was initially held at a federal jail in Memphis, but was caught with a 6-inch shank hidden in the mattress in his jail cell. Even while standing before the judge in December 2010, he tried to minimize the crime -- saying it was a piece of "plastic off my tray," before agreeing with prosecutors' assertions that it was made of metal and sharpened into a crude knife. Petties was moved to a jail in Atlanta, but prosecutors filed a request, in a document that still remains sealed, to move him. According to a copy of the judge's September 2012 order, Mays agreed there was "good cause" Petties should be sent to a federal jail in New York, where he was placed in solitary confinement.Petties, caught by Memphis police with an estimated $300,000 worth of marijuana in 2001, fled the country in 2002. He lived a life of luxury in Acapulco and central Mexico under the protection of his drug suppliers, the violent and powerful Beltran Leyva cartel, and had a personal trainer, chef, maid, nanny, driver and armed security detail. When police in the country pulled him over for any reason, after Petties made a quick call to the cartel, the officers ended up apologizing to him.Despite landing on the U.S. Marshals Service 15 Most Wanted list, Petties could avoid capture by keeping on the move and bribing corrupt Mexican officials. But in January 2008 he feared his phone calls were being intercepted so he threw the phone away, preventing any officials from tipping him off.The military blocked off streets, sent snipers crawling on rooftops of area homes, positioned a helicopter to hover above and stormed Petties' homes in the upscale suburb of Queretaro, 136 miles northwest of Mexico City. Petties, speaking Spanish, tried to bribe his way free, but was arrested. Four of his children, twin 4-year-old boys and girls ages 10 and 16, were taken to a facility. The children's mother, Latosha Booker, 35, who was taking their 10-month-old girl to the nanny at the time, eventually returned to the U.S. with her children.Petties was quickly deported to Houston before being brought to Memphis. He immediately began to cooperate with federal prosecutors, who initially had considered pursuing the death penalty against him. In exchange for his cooperation, Petties wanted help safeguarding Booker and his children from a vengeful cartel.Petties pleaded guilty to 19 charges, including ordering four murders, during a secret hearing in 2009. Much of the court case remains sealed. His sentencing will end the 12-year-old case of a drug-trafficking organization believed to be one of the largest and most deadly in Tennessee history.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Commercial Appeal (Memphis, Tenn.) Pension delay proposal sparks new debate on retirement age
Proposals to raise the age at which Chinese people are entitled to a pension, in order to help ease the country’s financial burden, have renewed debate over changes to the retirement age. A scheme proposed by academics from Tsinghua University in Beijing suggests raising the pension age for both men and women to 65 from 2030 — up from the current ages of 60 for men and 50 for women. This proposed age is based on the pace of aging in China, said Yang Yansui, director of the Tsinghua Center for Employment and Social Security.Yang added that raising the age at which someone can claim a pension does not imply an adjustment to the retirement age.It would mean, however, that retirees wouldn’t receive a pension until they turn 65.In response, Tang Jun, secretary-general of the social policy research center of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, wrote an essay this week arguing that most people cannot work until 65, and adding that employment opportunities for younger workers would also be affected.“It will trigger resentment among older workers and anger from the young when they can’t find jobs,” Tang predicted.China has been considering r迷你倉沙田ising its retirement age since 2008 to cope with its shrinking workforce and aging society, which together are placing a growing burden on the pension system. The Tsinghua scheme and Tang’s essay stirred renewed debate online — with few in favor of any raise.“What will we rely on to sustain daily life during the gap from retiring at 50 until we receive a pension 15 years later?” asked microblogger Song Chi.Song’s confusion and anger were echoed by many users on Sina Weibo microblog.“If implemented, subways and buses of the future will be crowded with gray-haired people dreaming of retirement, while jobless twenty-somethings strolling in parks yearn for employment,” said Xiaoyu Shasha on Sina Weibo.Meanwhile, many urged reform of the much-criticized dual pension mechanism, which solicits endowment insurance from non-government workers, while excusing government staff from the fees.“It is difficult to expect a fair and well-recognized retirement and pension proposal unless the pension system is reformed, as the delay may benefit some people at the expense of others,” wrote a microblogger using the name Urban Nomads.

Marketers urged to revise strategies in internet age
Source: Bangkok Post, ThailandAug. 23--Marketers should quickly adjust their strategies in order to respond to today's consumers, whose behaviours are dominated by online technology, says Mindshare Thailand, the global marketing and media agency.A fast and flexible marketing approach should be used to integrate database and resources and comply with consumer insights in terms of all aspects of marketing, enabling marketers to respond to consumer behaviours and environmental changes and create a more customised brand experience.Managing director Nilufar Fowler said Mindshare Thailand mines useful online data from the personal information of 3,254 people each week.As well, IBM, the world's biggest computer-services provider, said 90% of all online data today has been collected in the past two years.Consumers receive general and specific content from their networks and friends amid the proliferation of satellite TV and online channels.Adaptive marketing comprises three main areas. First, consumer behaviours should be "personalised" by live marketing campaigns.Second, media technology and marketers should have greater access to online channels and consumers' digital devices such as mobiles, tablets and augmented-reality digital te新蒲崗迷你倉hnology platforms.Third, marketers should communicate widely spoken issues with their target groups, particularly through online channels, thereby creating buzz including in other media.Pathamawan Sathaporn, the head of business planning, said brands can receive a better return on investment from adaptive marketing. For example, when consumers bought a product before, they may have made their decision after receiving information from one media outlet. But now consumers obtain product information from many channels before making a buying decision, so media planners should put product information on many channels.A good media plan can change mindsets based on a good understanding of brand objectives and dynamics across all media, be they online or offline."Marketers should monitor and report on their campaigns on a continuing basis to improve results. Audiences always move more quickly than advertisers can reach them in a meaningful manner," said Ms Pathamawan. She said adaptive marketing is a way to maintain or raise sales among the country's economic slowdown.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Bangkok Post (Bangkok, Thailand) Visit the Bangkok Post (Bangkok, Thailand) at .bangkokpost.com Distributed by MCT Information Servicesmini storage

Beware market overreaction
Fear that the US Federal Reserve (Fed) will pull back on purchasing federal debt triggered manic selling in Asian markets on Tuesday as several economies in the region saw their currency and stock markets fall by big margins, with the Hong Kong stock market losing 493 points to close at 21,970 for the steepest drop in seven weeks. The capital exodus prompted by worries that the Fed is cutting back debt purchase also gave some pundits a reason to sound the alarm on the prospect of emerging economies. However, this is not the first time international speculators played the scare tactic to profit from panic selling and certainly will not be their last. The latest fall in Asian markets was apparently another example of overreaction to unsubstantiated hearsay. Given the fact that the leading economies (the US, EU and China) are doing relatively well at the moment, the financial market is in a good place in terms of growth and investors should think twice before falling for such scare tactics. Huge amounts of cheap capital have flooded emerging markets since leading Western economies led by the US began quantitative easing (QE) to stimulate their own recovery, bringing temporary prosperity as well as growing risk of an asset bubble burst to the developing countries. The Fed is expected to begin reducing debt purchases as early as next momini storageth, triggering a mass return of capital back to developed nations that shook emerging economies as well as their financial markets and exchange rates quite violently. Some fortune-tellers went so far as to predict another financial Asian financial storm could be on the way, contributing to the panic-driven market fall in the region, including Hong Kong’s. It should be noted that several economic indicators showed better than expected results in recent months while the US and European economies continue to stabilize. The mainland economy in particular is improving and gives neighboring economies a good reason to feel confident about their own prospects in the near future. Speculators thrive in market fluctuations and will never stop trying to induce ups and downs for their own benefit. The US cannot afford to abandon QE all of a sudden, which means speculators can reuse the scare tactic as often as they feel like it until its “magic” wears off. Investors here should be on guard against overreaction and losing money in “Fed-fear” games. This is an excerpted translation of a Wen Wei Po editorial published on Aug 21.
