Source: Mail Tribune, Medford, Ore. Sept. 05--An anonymous tip led to the capture of homicide suspect Jose Valencia-Gaona, who was spotted Wednesday near the railroad tracks running through central Medford."We received word that this individual was seen in the area of Clark Street near the railroad tracks," Medford police Chief Tim George said. "We were able to get out there in a short time and arrested the suspect without incident."And so ended a three-day hunt for Valencia-Gaona, 45, who was lodged in the Jackson County Jail on a murder charge and $1 million bail.George hinted that Valencia-Gaona could face additional charges for his alleged actions at the murder scene after the Jackson County District Attorney's Office has reviewed the case."There could be charges such as menacing, as he did threaten some witnesses with a knife that night," George said.Investigators are still piecing together the events leading up to the murder of Maria Guadalupe Rodriguez, 38, who was brutally stabbed outside her apartment Sunday night."There are no happy endings to a homicide," George said. "This is a very sad case."Police allege Valencia-Gaona of Medford jumped from a hiding spot in the bushes outside Rodriguez's apartment at 1990 Table Rock Road at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday and stabbed her several times. He also swiped at witnesses who tried to intervene and ran away before authorities arrived, police say.George said Valencia-Gaona and Rodriguez knew each other but declined to elaborate."They were known to each other, but we won't go into the motive at this point," George said.Witnesses have reported that Valencia-Gaona was seen at Rodriguez's apartment in the weeks before the murde儲存倉.Having a suspected killer on the loose prompted the Medford Police Department to call in extra manpower working overtime to comb through leads.Officers spent hours chasing down faulty tips that had to be cleared, George said."We appreciate that the public was so willing to talk to us," George said. "We took every tip seriously and were fortunate that we got the one that led to this dangerous individual."In all, the department had 30 extra people on board for the 72-hour search effort. The agency's SWAT team was scheduled for training on Tuesday and was diverted to a search team, George said.Investigators will look into whether Valencia-Gaona had an accomplice helping him allegedly hide out from police in the days after the murder."We want to know what he's been doing since the murder happened," George said.Homicide detectives were interviewing Valencia-Gaona at police headquarters Wednesday in the hours after his arrest. Following the interview, he was shipped to jail, where he will wait until his first court appearance.A murder charge carries a minimum 25-year prison sentence upon conviction under Oregon law.George previously said Valencia-Gaona has lived in the area for the past four or five years. Court records don't show any criminal history for him in Oregon.Rodriguez left behind two children, a son who lives in Alaska and a daughter living in Eugene. The son is in Medford and has been in contact with police during the search for Valencia-Gaona."Our thoughts are with these family members," George said.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Mail Tribune (Medford, Ore.) Source: Tulsa World, Okla. Sept. 05--Dueling press conferences in Claremore and Tulsa on Wednesday showed a deep and growing divide among prosecutors and police in Rogers County.Law officers met the media that morning at the Claremore Police Department, formally asking the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation to look into allegations of wrongdoing by District Attorney Janice Steidley, who serves Rogers, Mayes and Craig counties."It's everybody's mission here (Wednesday) to fix something that's badly broken," said Rogers County Sheriff Scott Walton, flanked by about 20 police officers and municipal officials from the area.Walton and two Claremore police officers are among the six people who requested a grand jury investigation into Steidley and other Rogers County officials. That petition was deemed sufficient for circulation last week by a Grady County judge, and a drive is underway to compile the 4,480 signatures necessary to convene a grand jury.In the office of her private attorney, Clark Brewster, Steidley held her own news conference Wednesday afternoon. There, Brewster placed the origin of the rift with Steidley's calling out the integrity of John Singer, an investigator with the Claremore Police Department.About eight months ago, Steidley introduced into the court record documents questioning the detective's credibility, determining that alleged misstatements by him related to a criminal case constituted "impeachment evidence" that the prosecutor is required to disclose, records show.A 1963 Supreme Court case, Giglio v. the United States, mandated that the prosecution in a criminal case should disclose any and all information that might be used to impeach the credibility of prosecution witnesses, including law enforcement officers."When Janice Steidley learned of the situation involving John Singer that she felt was game for cross-examination, and she was duty-bound to turn that over to the defense, she did so," Brewster said. "That's what's initiated essentially this mutiny. She's going to stand right in the same spot and do it again if she finds that it's the kind of thing that cross-examination should be engaged in."John Singer ought to invite that, because if he's going to be honest on the stand, he should be able to beat that cross-examination."Steidley took office as district attorney in January 2011."I thought I had a very good relationship with law enforcement up until this happened," the prosecutor said of the Singer disclosure."When it comes to a Giglio issue, whether that rises to a criminal level is a whole other issue," Steidley said. "That should not be intertwined. You can have credibility issues that are not criminal issues."Claremore Police Chief Stan Brown said Steidley never has let a district judge rule on the a儲存legations she made against Singer, adding that Steidley asked the state Attorney General's Office to investigate whether the officer had committed perjury.District Attorney Dennis Smith, who serves Beckham, Custer, Ellis, Rogers Mills and Washita counties, was assigned to investigate allegations of perjury by Singer.Representatives of the Attorney General's Office have told Brown that no perjury charge will be filed against Singer, Brown said."This is significant in many ways," Brown said in a prepared statement. "First, it clears John Singer of this horrific allegation. Secondly, it speaks to a pattern of poor judgment by District Attorney Janice Steidley."Walton said that "cops are scared to do their jobs. When the hunters become the hunted, it certainly sends out a message to the criminal that it's easier for them to do their job in these jurisdictions."In February, Singer filed a complaint against Steidley in federal court, alleging that prosecutors manufactured evidence that he had lied in sworn statements concerning a criminal investigation. A portion of that case is pending.Walton said Wednesday that he is asking the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation to probe questions that largely mirror those in the grand jury petition. That document asks whether Steidley should be removed from office for "oppression and corruption in office and willful maladministration."The paperwork also alleges malfeasance by Assistant District Attorneys David Iski and Timothy Wantland and County Commissioners Mike Helm and Kirk Thacker. The petition requests an examination into claims that Steidley and Iski conspired to order a third party to destroy government emails and whether Wantland told a judge that the family of a child molestation victim had agreed to a plea agreement that included reducing the minimum punishment for the crime, court documents say.Claremore Mayor Mickey Perry and Claremore City Manager Jim Thomas were among the nonofficers who stood with police at the Claremore press conference. Bryce Lair, an assistant district attorney, joined Steidley and Brewster in Tulsa."I think the people of Oklahoma should be very proud of this woman, especially in light of what we find ourselves in here in Tulsa," Brewster said. "We're defending multiple lawsuits in the federal prosecution of police officers who weren't always truthful."When Janice Steidley became elected DA and stood up and said, 'Listen, I'm going to verify this information, and I'm not going to prosecute just based upon some officer's word,' they've now banded against her in some way."Rhett Morgan 918-581-8395rhett.morgan@tulsaworld.comCopyright: ___ (c)2013 Tulsa World (Tulsa, Okla.)
